Hope Coalition

Red Wing, Minnesota

HOPE Coalition serves ordinary people navigating extraordinary trauma — survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, homelessness, and families struggling to meet their most basic needs. When individuals arrive, they are often frightened, overwhelmed, and isolated, seeking safety, clarity, and a path forward. The design vision for this project begins at that critical moment — the point where fear meets possibility — and transforms it into an environment that restores hope and supports the rebuilding of lives.
The design is guided by the understanding that healing requires more than shelter; it requires dignity, security, and a sense of belonging. Spaces are intentionally designed to balance safety and openness, privacy and connection. Clear sightlines, controlled access, and layered security strategies provide protection, while warm materials, natural light, and human-scaled environments counteract the institutional feel often associated with crisis facilities. The goal is to create an atmosphere that communicates care from the moment someone enters.
Serving approximately 1,200 individuals annually across Goodhue, Wabasha, and Western Pierce (WI) counties, HOPE Coalition is the sole provider of domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault services in its region, and a primary provider of housing and homelessness support. The design responds to this comprehensive mission by organizing programs into welcoming, clearly defined zones that support confidentiality, trauma-informed care, and operational efficiency.
The Haven of Hope domestic violence shelter is envisioned as a place of refuge — secure yet residential in character — supporting both emergency shelter and outreach services for over 400 individuals annually. Housing Support Services and the Community Care Fund areas are designed to foster stability and empowerment, offering flexible meeting rooms and private consultation spaces that respect confidentiality while promoting forward movement. Sexual Assault Services areas are carefully planned to ensure discretion, comfort, and emotional safety, recognizing the sensitivity of those seeking care. Dedicated crisis response spaces support immediate intervention while maintaining calm and order.
At every scale — from site planning to interior detailing — the architecture embodies HOPE Coalition’s mission: Empowering lives through HOPE. The building becomes more than a facility; it becomes a physical expression of resilience, compassion, and community responsibility. Through thoughtful design, the environment itself participates in the healing process, helping transform moments of crisis into foundations for renewal.
